The Record
Commute turns Off Land's former subway journey into compositional structure. The artist explains that four field recordings—two outward journeys and two returns—were layered into a sixty-eight-minute collage, then used as the framework for the music. Different sound sources prompted piano, dulcimer, drum, drone and synthesizer associations. The three sections follow the walk to the subway, the ride downtown and the second outbound line. Its duration is therefore part of the concept: this is an album organized by a recorded route, with the field collage determining its unfolding. Release description and source notes
