Terms of Service

Squirrel Away is a free-to-own torrent tracker: films, books read aloud, albums, and more, each one free to download and share in the United States after our own research — by copyright expiry, by an explicit dedication to the public, or by a public license its makers chose. For each title we publish the copy we judge best, along with our editorial and a documented rights rationale. We distribute that copy ourselves: our own .torrent file, seeded from our own seedbox and tracked by our own tracker, alongside an Archive.org webseed.

What you may do with these files

Own them. Every title here may be downloaded, kept, copied, seeded and shared, by anyone, for good — that is the site's one promise, and a title that cannot make it does not ship. What else you may do depends on the title, and its own page says:

• A public-domain work — the term ran out, or its makers dedicated it — carries no owner to ask. Re-cut it, score it, build on it, sell what you make. We grant you nothing, because we have nothing to grant; the rights are already yours. Attribution is a courtesy, not a duty.
• A licensed work — an album released under a Creative Commons license, say — is yours to own and share on the terms its makers set, and those terms are named on its page: some ask for credit, some forbid selling copies, some forbid reworking it. We pass the license through unchanged. We add nothing to it and take nothing from it.

The rights statement that governs a work is the one on that work's page, never a claim made site-wide.

No warranty

We verify carefully — video and audio are checked separately, since a public-domain film can carry a separately copyrighted score or restoration — but PD status is a legal judgment, not a certainty, and the underlying facts (renewal records, publication dates, foreign-sourced claims) occasionally turn out to be wrong or incomplete. Everything here is offered as is, with no warranty of accuracy, availability, or fitness for any purpose. If you rely on our public-domain determination for your own use of a film, that reliance is yours to weigh.

Using the site

Browse, download, and seed freely — no account required. Creating an account is optional and gets you a personalized torrent so your seeding counts toward your stats. Don't use the service to attack the tracker, scrape it abusively, impersonate another user, or upload anything through the "report a better print" form that you don't have the right to share. We can suspend accounts that abuse the service.

Affiliate links (to commercial restorations, era-appropriate books, and the like) are marked as what they are: plain links that may earn us a small commission. They don't change what we say about a film.

Takedowns and disputes

If you believe a title is not actually free to distribute as we say, or that we've made some other error, see our takedown page for how to reach us and what happens next. We take these seriously — but because false claims against genuinely free works are common, a claim against a title we've documented is answered with that documentation, not an automatic removal.
