The Book
Written for one particular child on one particular boating afternoon in 1862, and it still reads like something made up on the spot — a dream that follows dream logic exactly, which is to say none. The jokes are for adults (the Mock Turtle's school curriculum, the trial), the terror is for children (growing too large for the room), and the poems are parodies of improving verse nobody has read in a century, which somehow makes them funnier. Twelve short chapters; the whole thing is under three hours aloud.
Kara Shallenberg's solo reading is unhurried and does not perform the characters at you, which suits a book whose narrator is always slightly amused. Read it to someone.

The book has 12 chapters and the item has 12 chapter files; no gaps, no duplicates. The collection holds nine complete readings of this title plus a dramatic version (an adaptation, out of scope); this one was picked for the reader, and the 2010 Eric Leach solo is a good alternate.
Published on the source's record rather than a listen-through (owner decision, 2026-08-26): LibriVox proof-listens every completed project chapter by chapter before release, and the three pilots' full listens turned up nothing their project pages had not already said — so the chapter table and byte check above are the verification, and the first listener who finds a fault in this reading should write to the Den.
