A semi-documentary police procedural that is really a pretext for John Alton to photograph Los Angeles at night, and the storm-drain finale is one of the most beautiful sequences in American film. Richard Basehart's killer is a technician who works alone and says almost nothing. Anthony Mann directed part of it uncredited. It is also, directly, where Dragnet came from — Jack Webb is in the cast and left with the idea.

Broadcast captures, AI upscales, colorised and frame-interpolated copies were rejected outright; where a candidate's frame was a different shape, cropdetect was used to tell a genuinely wider picture from a crop hiding in a wide container.
