The Record
Somnatika combines sleep-derived electronic sequences with M-PeX's Portuguese guitar. The artist explains that EEG signals from different sleep stages were converted into MIDI notes, then selectively shaped with arpeggios, chosen instruments, octaves and tempos. Guitar was recorded over that sonification. Twenty-one pieces carry names such as “Synaptika,” “Axonium,” “Remnevoa” and “Neuronika.” This is both data-derived material and an artistic arrangement: the sleep signals are shaped through selected tempos, instruments and arpeggios before the guitar is added.
