The Record

Matt Nathanson's Blue Note recording indexes conversation and improvisation almost as extensively as songs. “Then I'll Be Smiling,” “Sad Songs” and “Stay” sit among a Columbia country improvisation, talk about Journey and a lighting-guy improvisation. “Bent,” “Detroit Waves,” “Forgiveness” and “Fall to Pieces” lead toward “Laid,” “Answering Machine” and “Suspended,” before “Little Victories” closes the encore with an “America” annotation. Covers share the program with Nathanson’s own songs, while the spoken and improvised sections recur throughout the evening. A snagged cable cost several seconds at the beginning of “I Saw,” so this chat-rich performance document also has a specific capture gap.
