The Weeknd closed his first year of mixtapes with Echoes of Silence, released as a free nine-track download on December 21, 2011. It follows House of Balloons and Thursday, completing the three separate releases that later formed Trilogy. The release announcement pointed listeners to the singer's website and his own download link.

“D.D.” opens with a reinterpretation of Michael Jackson's “Dirty Diana.” From there the sequence moves through “Montreal,” the combined “XO / The Host,” and “Initiation” before ending with the title song. Illangelo handles most of the production; Clams Casino joins him on “The Fall,” while Juicy J contributes to “Same Old Song.” Those credits place the release within the exchange between Toronto R&B and the rap producers surrounding it.

The original tracklist has nine entries. “Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)” belongs to the later reissue. Preserving that distinction keeps the December mixtape's ending intact.
