A novel about a whaling voyage that keeps stopping to be about everything else — cetology, Shakespeare, the color white, the rope, the price of a barrel of oil, whether a whale is a fish. Ahab's revenge on the animal that took his leg is the spine, and Ishmael's digressions are the flesh, and the book's reputation for being hard to finish comes from readers who thought the digressions were in the way. Heard aloud they are the best part: Melville wrote sermons and sea-chanteys and stage directions into a single book, and a voice can do things with that a page cannot.

Peter Dann's solo reading takes all 135 chapters plus the Etymology, the Extracts and the Epilogue, which is the whole book and nothing but — no abridgement, no "essential chapters". Nearly twenty-four hours. This is the endurance title on the shelf, and it is torrent-sized by nature.

138 sections is 135 chapters plus Etymology, Extracts and Epilogue: the count matches the full text exactly. No gaps, no duplicates, running order correct once sorted; the 128 kbps MP3 set ships. The 2007 Stewart Wills reading was considered and passed over because it bundles chapters into 44 unevenly-sized files, which makes the completeness check a hand job rather than a count.
