Paul Leni brought German Expressionist technique to a Hollywood haunted-house comedy and invented a template nobody has stopped using: the will read at midnight, relatives who must survive the night, the clawed hand from behind the panel, corridors of billowing curtain. Leni's camera prowls in a way American films of 1927 simply did not. Every old-dark-house picture since is downstream of it.
