Two friends on a fishing trip pick up a man with a gun who cannot fully close one eye, so they can never tell whether he is asleep. Ida Lupino keeps almost the whole film inside a car and the Mexican desert, and the tension comes straight out of that single physical fact. William Talman is genuinely frightening. Seventy-one minutes, no fat on it anywhere.
