Willis O'Brien's stop-motion dinosaurs, eight years before he did King Kong, and the first feature that made audiences believe in animated creatures sharing a frame with actors. Conan Doyle screened test footage at a magicians' society in 1922 and let them wonder whether it might be real. Wallace Beery blusters through as Challenger. The brontosaurus loose in London is the dress rehearsal for every monster-in-the-city film that followed.

Deliberately the short, safe cut (owner decision, 2026-08-17). The original 1925 release ran ~106 minutes, but the film survived the intervening century mainly as heavily cut Kodascope 16mm prints, and the circulating longer versions (~93 min and up) descend from the 1998 and 2016 reconstructions — commercial restorations that recovered lost footage from archives, exactly the transfer class we don't launder. The 68-minute Kodascope-lineage copy is the most-downloaded print on Archive.org and its provenance is safe. Runtime corrected 106 → 68 to describe the shipped copy.

Revisit note: if a longer print with honest provenance ever surfaces (a pre-restoration archival transfer), it supersedes this as a v2 edition — the fuller film is better editorial when it can be shipped cleanly. Until then, short and safe beats long and laundered.
