Conrad Veidt as a man whose face was carved into a permanent grin in childhood, condemned to be laughed at for the one expression he cannot escape. Paul Leni directs it as tragedy rather than horror, and Veidt does an extraordinary amount of acting with only his eyes available to him. The makeup gave the world the Joker fifteen years later, which has rather obscured that the film underneath is a genuinely moving Hugo adaptation.
