The Feature
Rural gothic rather than city noir — a farmer with a wooden leg who will not let anyone walk into the woods, a house in there that nobody will discuss, and a teenage boy who decides to find out why. Edward G. Robinson plays the guilt-rotted patriarch and Judith Anderson the sister holding the arrangement together. Miklós Rózsa's score reaches for a theremin. The dread here is agricultural and slow and it gets well under the skin.
