A killing in childhood binds three people to a factory town for eighteen years and none of them can leave it alone. Barbara Stanwyck runs the town and the marriage; Kirk Douglas, in his screen debut, plays her husband as soft, drunk and frightened, which is emphatically not how anyone cast him afterward. Van Heflin drifts back into town and the whole arrangement begins to come apart. Long for a noir, and it uses the length.
