The Record

Earl Sweatshirt's Earl was issued as a free download through Odd Future on March 31, 2010. It is his first project under the Earl Sweatshirt name, following earlier work as Sly Tendencies. The release history credits production to Tyler, the Creator, Left Brain and BeatBoy and places the recording in Los Angeles.

The original tape is ten tracks long, with “Earl,” “Couch,” “Luper” and “Stapleton” among its songs. Tyler appears on “Couch” and “Pigions,” while Vince Staples guests on “epaR.” The provocative titles and violent, offensive material belong to the early Odd Future period; the record's historical importance does not depend on softening that context. A later critical retrospective examines how the release reached listeners beyond the group's own site.

Expanded collections sometimes attach older Sly Tendencies material or other loose tracks. The tracklist here follows the original ten-entry release, preserving its short length and ending rather than treating every circulating compilation as the same mixtape.
