The Record
Joey Bada$$ released 1999 on June 12, 2012, while still seventeen. Its title looks backward, but the project also introduces a young Brooklyn collective: Pro Era members appear throughout the fifteen-track tape, and the closing posse cut brings that group identity to the foreground. Release-day coverage preserves the original download announcement.
The production credits put new collaborators alongside established names. Chuck Strangers contributes to the opening stretch; tracks use beats associated with MF DOOM, J Dilla and Lord Finesse. These credits help explain the tape's connection to earlier New York rap without treating its young performers as footnotes to their influences.
The closing track is labeled “Suspect” in this download; other editions call it “Third Eye Shit.” The later commercial release is a reference point, while the selected mixtape source keeps the original source naming. The page records which edition its titles describe.
