The Record

Kid Cudi's A Kid Named Cudi arrived on July 17, 2008, presented through 10.Deep and Fool's Gold. Plain Pat, Emile Haynie and Dot da Genius helped build the project around the Cleveland artist's developing voice. The oral history assembled by DJBooth follows those relationships from New York apartments and MySpace to the mixtape's release.

“Day N Nite” is the familiar entry point, but the seventeen-track tape gives it company: “The Prayer,” “Man On The Moon (The Anthem),” “Cleveland Is The Reason” and “Heaven At Nite.” Wale joins “Is There Any Love?” and Chip the Ripper appears on “T.G.I.F.” Its borrowed material reaches beyond rap to artists including Band of Horses, Ratatat and Paul Simon.

The 2022 reissue uses a new introduction and omits “50 Ways to Make a Record.” The original seventeen-track sequence retained here preserves that song and the earlier release's boundaries.
