The Record

Five years after the first one, and better: Out of It is the Brad Sucks record where the songs caught up with the idea. Dropping out of School opens it at a sprint, Bad Sign and Certain Death are the catchiest things he has written, and the title track is a slow one that earns it. Same one-man method, same ShareAlike license, same open stems — Creative Commons announced the release on its own blog in September 2008 as the model of how a working independent musician could give an album away and still make a living from it. Thirty-four minutes; it does not overstay.

Chosen copy: the Jamendo mirror on the Internet Archive, item jamendo-031187 — 10 MP3 files, contiguously numbered 01.mp3 … 10.mp3, 54 MB, 34 min, with License.txt, Readme.txt and the cover art. Track titles (Dropping out of School through You're not Going Anywhere) are in the item description and the files' tags.

Checked: ten tracks, no gaps. Lossy mirror, as with its predecessor; the artist's Bandcamp FLAC would be a separate edition once the builder takes a non-Archive.org webseed.

One layer, the artist's license:

The license. Released 2008-09-08 under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (the license file in the release; Creative Commons' announcement of the album). Yours to download, keep, seed, share, rework and sell, with credit; derivatives carry the same license.
The cover art is covered too, and by name. That same license file lists the ten tracks and then artwork on its own line, at CC BY-SA 3.0; the Free Music Archive mirror of the release carries the license at item level as well. The art is ANSI work by Fredrik Olsson, aka Big Yellow Man, whom Turcotte credits on his own blog — "television", the piece on the back cover, is his. Olsson died in October 2014, so the grant rests on Turcotte having licensed commissioned work that way; he asserted it in the release and nothing contradicts it. Recorded 2026-09-21, when the cover moved from non-free to free.
