The third and final Universal Flash Gordon serial, and the one where the machine is fully warmed up: the Purple Death dust falling from the sky, Ming at his most imperially unbothered, and Buster Crabbe carrying twelve chapters of rocket-ship pulp with total conviction. If the 1936 original invented space opera on screen, this is the same crew playing the hits with better sets and surer pacing. It stands in for its still-copyrighted 1936 sibling until that one's term runs out — a substitution the catalog makes openly, because this is the Flash Gordon you can actually keep.

Ships as a single multi-file torrent containing all 12 chapters in order, which is how a serial was actually shown — a chapter a week. Chapter files are zero-padded so their running order is their sort order.

Found by a serial-aware sweep, which sums every video file in an item rather than judging one file at a time; the ordinary print sweep could not see serials at all, because it compared a single 20-minute chapter against a multi-hour listing and discarded the item. The chapter sequence was checked for gaps — a missing chapter is the usual failure and is invisible unless counted — and the release total was verified against Archive.org's published sizes before hashing.

Public domain in the United States by non-renewal, checked against the primary record: the scanned Catalog of Copyright Entries motion-picture volumes for 1967–69 contain no renewal of this serial — searched under its title, its "Space Soldiers" reissue title, and chapter titles (method and limits recorded in our verification notes). The contrast carries the same force as Dick Tracy's: Universal renewed the 1936 Flash Gordon serial's thirteen chapters in 1964 (R332767 et seq.), so a proprietor actively renewing this exact property filed nothing for the 1940 one. Decades of PD video distribution of the serial and its feature edit corroborate.

Character-rights posture, stated plainly: King Features' trademarks in "Flash Gordon" never lapse on a term, but under Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox (2003) a trademark cannot control distribution of a public-domain film. House rule as with Zorro: the mark appears in the film's own title and editorial prose only — never in site chrome, branding, or promotion.
