The Feature

The most famous public domain film ever made—and with good reason. George Romero's Night of the Living Dead created the zombie picture as we know it, filmed on shoestring budgets with Pittsburgh locations standing in for rural Pennsylvania. What began as a practical necessity—a low-budget horror shoot with non-professional actors and community locations—became the template every zombie film since has either followed or rebelled against. The dead walk, civilization collapses in real time, and there's no third-act redemption in sight.

Print Report

Chosen print (2026-08-17, re-selected): Archive.org item NightOfTheLivingDead-MPEG, file NightOfTheLivingDead.mpg — 1.41 GB MPEG-2, 640x480, 95.7 min against the catalog's 96, 131k downloads.

Re-selected because the originally chosen item (night_of_the_living_dead) was darkened by Archive.org — removed from public access — before our torrent ever shipped, which is exactly the item-moved fragility the delivery design anticipated. No public info_hash existed, so the replacement is a clean v1, not an upgrade edition.

Culled along the way: an 11.5 GB "1080p" copy and explicitly "Restored"/"Remastered HD" items — the 2016 MoMA-scan restoration lineage is a commercial transfer we don't launder, and NOTLD is the single most restoration-polluted PD title there is; a widescreen crop of the full-frame original; an _ipod derivative.

The WATCH link points at the item's h.264 derivative (NightOfTheLivingDead.mp4) because browsers cannot play MPEG-2; the torrent carries the MPEG-2 source above. The film is presented as released: black and white, full frame.

Public Domain

Why It's Free

Released in 1968 without a copyright notice after a title change from an earlier story adaptation. Because the copyright was never properly registered and the original notice was omitted from release prints, the film entered the public domain immediately upon distribution. No restoration studio, no archive, no legal claim to defend—just raw, decades-old footage now yours to keep and share.
