The Record
Ari Hest's Bottleneck set pairs new material with explicitly identified covers. The taper marks “When and If,” “So Slow,” “Just as Well,” “Bird Never Flies” and “Upstairs” as new songs, giving this Lawrence recording value as a dated songwriting snapshot. “I'm on Fire” opens the show, while “Mercy Street” sits midway through the program; the source attributes them to Springsteen and Peter Gabriel respectively. The ending moves through “They're on to Me” into a separately indexed introduction for “Strangers Again,” then closes with “Sleep Tonight.”
