The Record
The Grateful Dead's May 8, 1977 concert at Cornell University's Barton Hall became a landmark through the circulation of recordings. The performance entered the National Recording Registry in 2011, decades after the show. That history makes the tape itself part of the story: people carried this concert from one collection to another long before an official album appeared. The Library of Congress essay traces the concert and its afterlife.
This copy comes from the audience. Jeff Stevenson recorded it with handheld Shure microphones about ten feet from the stage, then transferred his master through CD-R and WAV to FLAC. His notes disclose lower vocals, audience interruptions and tape flips, including a crossfade during “Not Fade Away.” The 23 files preserve tuning and crowd-management passages alongside the music. “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire on the Mountain” and the closing “Morning Dew” give the second set its long arc. Stevenson's source record documents this particular recording; the commercial soundboard release has a different provenance.
