The Record

The Grateful Dead's Santa Barbara stadium show runs from “U.S. Blues” through “China Cat Sunflower”/“I Know You Rider” in the first set, then opens the second with “The Promised Land” and “Ship of Fools.” “Truckin'” moves through a jam/space passage toward “Let It Grow” and “Wharf Rat,” followed by an equipment-malfunction entry containing “Beer Barrel Polka.” Jeremy Witt's retrospective account describes concealing the cassette recorder inside the stadium the night before and using handheld microphones during the show. Those recollections give this audience document a personal setting, placing the music within the taper’s remembered stadium experience.
