The Record

The Grateful Dead's Saratoga performance opens “Bertha” into “Jack Straw,” then brings “Bird Song,” “Althea” and “Hell in a Bucket” into a first set ending with “Deal.” The second starts “Scarlet Begonias”/“Fire on the Mountain,” sends “Playing in the Band” through drums and space to “The Wheel,” then returns to the Playing theme before “Morning Dew.” “Throwing Stones,” “Not Fade Away” and “Touch of Grey” complete the main program, followed by a two-song encore. The source says microphone placement and mixing changed between sets, giving the two portions of the Saratoga recording different capture perspectives.
