The Record

The Grateful Dead's Music Box recording survives as a mono audience reel, with the automatic-volume-control switch enabled. Its first set starts “Hard to Handle,” “Beat It on Down the Line” and “Morning Dew,” then joins “China Cat Sunflower,” “Doin' That Rag” and “It's a Sin” before “Turn on Your Lovelight.” The second begins “Sittin' on Top of the World” and sends “Cryptical Envelopment” through drums and “The Other One,” returning before “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen” and “The Eleven.” The last piece cuts off. This is a valuable dated sequence, but the abrupt ending limits any claim of a fully captured performance.
