The Series
Every week for three years, John Newland walked out of the dark, looked straight down the lens and told you that what followed had happened to somebody. Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond ran on ABC from January 1959 to July 1961 — half an hour, no monster, no explanation, and a closing shrug where a twist should be. It beat The Twilight Zone to air by nine months and went the opposite way with the same material: Rod Serling wrote parables, Merwin Gerard's show claimed to be reporting. Premonitions, hauntings, a wife possessed on her honeymoon, a U-boat crew hearing a voice in an empty compartment — presented as case files, because the series' whole nerve was the flat assertion that these were true.
Newland directed all ninety-seven of them himself, which almost nothing on television can say, and it shows in how consistent the mood is: long silences, faces held too long, a camera that drifts when it should cut. Harry Lubin's theremin theme does the rest. It is a cheaper show than its reputation and a stranger one — some episodes are genuinely eerie, some are a man in a room explaining a coincidence for twenty-six minutes, and the series is more interesting for containing both.

Verified episode by episode, not as a series — the only way this shelf is allowed to work. Each episode's own page carries its receipt.
Two things had to be true of every episode before any of it could publish. First, that World Television Programming, Inc. registered it with the Copyright Office as a published motion picture — because a show that was only broadcast and syndicated was never published, never needed renewing, and is protected as an unpublished work-for-hire into the 2070s no matter what a public-domain list says. It did: the Catalog of Copyright Entries motion-picture volumes for 1959, 1960 and 1961 carry the entries under the series title and the claimant's name, each with its own copyright date and LP number. Second, that no renewal was filed in the 28th year. A sweep of the Copyright Office's own records for the claimant returns exactly twelve renewals, all from December 1989, all season three.
Those twelve episodes are still under copyright and are not published here — the gaps in the run are listed on this page rather than passed over in silence. Eight more are held back because their registration line is not legible in the scanned volumes; they are not published either until someone reads the page images. Underneath, the scripts are original teleplays with no renewal under any credited writer, and Harry Lubin's theme returned no renewal under composer or title — so unlike most vintage television, nothing survives in the music.
